We believe it is good news that Bruce Baizel is running for county commissioner in La Plata County. As a family that depends upon the land, water and wildlife for our living, we look for leaders who have shown care and dedication to the careful stewardship of the landscape upon which we all rely. We have seen that commitment in Bruce’s work on his family’s ranch, in his professional work on oil and gas issues, and in his enjoyment of the backcountry of the San Juan mountains. We trust Bruce to protect, preserve and help our county and communities to prosper.

Practiced water law in Colorado

Negotiated, drafted and reviewed conservation easements for ranch and agricultural lands

Served on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Land Alliance (formerly Upper San Juan Land Protection) and the Farm & Wilderness Foundation

Helped draft, negotiate and pass the Surface Owners’ Protection Act in New Mexico – legislation that increased the rights of surface owners when negotiating with oil and gas companies

Worked with Representatives Roberts and Curry, and Senator Isgar, to draft, negotiate and pass HB 1252 here in Colorado, which ensured that oil and gas companies would accommodate the rights of surface owners and minimize their impact on the surface

Appointed by Governor Richardson to the multi-stakeholder Pit Rule Task Force

Served on two national Work Groups: one looking at stormwater rules for oil and gas wells; the other looking at hydraulic fracturing

Reviewed and drafted ordinances for the City of Durango, Ouray, Saguache, and Pitkin counties, in Colorado, and for counties and townships in Washington and Pennsylvania

Coached both high school and college volleyball teams
